The crowns or porcelain covers, as the name suggests, are a complete coating of the tooth that copies the coronary anatomy. Its thickness is between 1-1.8 mm. They can only be made with porcelain or with a core made of another material to give it more consistency, such as precious metals or, more recently, zirconium (also a metal, but with a ceramic color) .
The tooth needs to be reduced in its entire contour to get a conical shape so that when the crown is placed it slides along the tooth walls to fit perfectly and completely hermetically. Once preparation is complete, measurements are taken and a temporary crown is placed. When the crown of the prosthetic laboratory is picked up, an examination is carried out and if everything is in order, it is cemented with a special glue or cement .
Indications
They are used when a large amount of tooth tissue has been lost, for example after a large cavity or trauma, as holding back a veneer or a filling would be very difficult:
They are also used in endodontic procedures to add consistency to the entire tooth and avoid possible fractures as the endodontic teeth are weakened by loss of flexibility and moisture. Therefore it is also convenient to place a metal reinforcement bolt .
Types of crowns: pros and consl
Their main advantages are aesthetics, retention and most importantly the great versatility they offer in correcting defects in tooth size, shape or color. They are also very resistant to abrasion and breakage, which gives the tooth great integrity. They can last for many years as they are harder than the teeth themselves .
